Contemporary photography museum Fotografiska’s newest outpost in Shenzhen is strikingly different from its original venue in Stockholm, Sweden – in the former customs building on the Stadsgardshamnen waterfront – or its Shanghai location, which opened in 2023 inside the Guang San Warehouse.
In Shenzhen, a technological metropolis where sleek high-rises and futuristic cultural venues continue to emerge, the museum integrates into the modern urban landscape with a crisp white rectangular facade and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows.
Opened on October 1, Fotografiska Shenzhen is the museum’s second location in China and fifth globally, following Stockholm, Tallinn, Berlin and Shanghai. It is the latest addition to Shenzhen’s expanding cultural infrastructure, after the Shenzhen International Museum of Art opened in May and the Shenzhen Natural History Museum in July.
Located on the third floor of the luxury Shenzhen Bay MixC complex, the museum is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and lifestyle boutiques. Its entrance feels more like that of an upscale design store than a traditional museum.
Designed by Shanghai-based studio Aim Architecture, which also created Fotografiska Shanghai, the Shenzhen branch spans about 57,000 sq ft (5,300 square metres). Its spatial concept, titled “Layers of the Future”, reflects the Stockholm museum’s vision for contemporary cultural institutions: a photography and visual arts venue that also incorporates culinary and lifestyle experiences.
Liu Jie, general manager of Shenzhen Bay MixC, says the development aims to “create more natural connections between art and city life. From exhibitions to conversations, the museum offers opportunities for communities to gather, bringing lasting vitality to the Shenzhen Bay cultural district.”Fotografiska Shenzhen has a design concept store and restaurant on its lower level; five galleries across three floors – including a main hall with an 8.5-metre (27.8-foot) high ceiling for large-scale photography and moving-image installations; and the Dome Lounge, an event space on the top floor dedicated to year-round performing arts programming.

The lounge was still being prepared on opening day. The restaurant, Mona, which will serve Mediterranean cuisine with Asian influences, is scheduled to open in late October.
Throughout the year, the museum will present photography, visual art and new-media exhibitions, alongside panel discussions, creative workshops, musical performances and live art showcases.
The inaugural exhibition season features a line-up spanning diverse genres and artistic traditions, including “ToiletFotoPaperGrafiska”, a surreal, immersive exhibition by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari; and , by global photography and sustainability award Prix Pictet, featuring shortlisted works addressing social upheaval and environmental crisis.

Also on the cards are German artist Michael Najjar’s solo exhibition , examining climate transformation; contemporary photographer Shi Guowei’s solo exhibition , reflecting on urban festive traditions; and the group exhibition , surveying artistic practices previously featured across Fotografiska venues.
The Dome Lounge, which can accommodate up to 180 standing guests, will host jazz salons, short film screenings and multidisciplinary art performances.
“Many young creators are working across cross-disciplinary formats, which provides a fantastic platform for championing emerging talent,” says Christian Devillers, managing director of Fotografiska China.
“Our approach to art is serious, yet we ensure it remains accessible to a broad audience,” Devillers says, noting that visitors range from seasoned contemporary art collectors to casual culture enthusiasts. “While this is challenging, we aim to strike the right balance between being an engaging destination for families, young people and serious art collectors.”

To encourage after-work visits and evening gatherings, the museum opens from 6pm to 10pm from Sunday to Thursday, and until 10.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Shenzhen’s rapid cultural expansion makes it a strategic location for the museum group. Devillers says the city met all the criteria for expansion: a mature commercial market for brand partnerships, an engaged cultural audience, adequate space and the right development partner.
“Shenzhen is the first city where all these operational elements aligned,” Devillers says. “From an economic perspective, securing and operating a comparable facility in Hong Kong would be [financially] impossible.”
Tickets cost 60 yuan (US$9), and the institution expects to welcome 70,000 visitors over the coming year.

On the financial realities facing contemporary art museums, Devillers says: “Virtually no museum operates sustainably on ticket revenue alone. Sustainability relies on government subsidies, patron support or commercial brand partnerships.”Fotografiska Shenzhen operates on a hybrid revenue model that includes admissions, memberships, dining, retail and corporate programming. The site was developed in partnership with China Resources Land, which co-invested 51 per cent alongside the Shenzhen Nanshan district government (holding 49 per cent). Fotografiska is the operator.
Although Shanghai and Shenzhen have distinct cultural identities, Devillers says both institutions will share curatorial resources and touring exhibitions. In late October, an exhibition celebrating Fan Ho and Hong Kong photographers from the 1950s will open in Shanghai – Ho’s birthplace – before travelling to Shenzhen.
“These photographers documented pivotal societal transformations and emerging generations defining new modes of style and expression,” Devillers says. “Photography as a medium captures those defining moments, anchoring visual culture and our perspectives [of looking at history] for the future.”
