New Zealand's Council of Trade Unions has welcomed a Green Party proposal to scrap the country's lower training minimum wage ahead of the 2026 election.
New Zealand's Council of Trade Unions (CTU) has welcomed a Green Party proposal to scrap the country's separate training minimum wage, a lower rate paid to some workers starting new jobs. The training wage currently stands at NZ$19.16 an hour, well below the adult minimum wage of NZ$23.95.
The CTU said abolishing the lower rate would be a step toward fairer pay for workers in new roles, but it called on the Greens to go further without specifying what additional changes it wants. The union body has long argued that separate, lower minimum wage tiers can be used to pay some workers less for comparable work.
The proposal emerged as parties set out policy positions ahead of New Zealand's 2026 election, in which wages and the cost of living have featured prominently. It remains unclear whether the Greens' plan would need support from other parties to take effect if they are not part of government after the vote.
