TOKYO -- Japan has changed its national records system to allow "Taiwan" as an entry in fields related to place of origin for individuals who have information kept with government agencies, Nikkei has learned.

Individuals from Taiwan previously needed to enter "China" for their nationality, but the rule change means the entry field can cover regions of origin as well as countries, using field labels such as "nationality, etc." More than 70,000 Taiwanese lived in Japan as of March, Japan's Immigration Services Agency reports. The change, which applies to government records such as those needed to work as a doctor or a caregiver for children, will enable more consideration for people's identity with their region of origin.

Japan confirmed that by October, none of the 322 qualifications administered by government agencies would have fields restricted solely to "nationality." As of 2022, 90 qualifications had such fields that were limited to nationality. Through revisions to ministerial ordinances and other directives, fields have been renamed "nationality/region" where information such as a person's permanent domicile must be specified. In some cases, the fields themselves were eliminated.
