New Zealand's economic research institute NZIER has warned that raising KiwiSaver contribution rates could leave some savers financially worse off in the near term. The institute's paper points to a trade-off between improving long-term retirement preparedness and preserving people's financial resilience today.

New Zealand's Institute of Economic Research has cautioned that raising KiwiSaver contribution rates, an option being floated ahead of the country's election, could weigh on household budgets in the short run. The institute's new paper frames the issue as a trade-off rather than a simple improvement.

According to the paper, pushing more of workers' pay into KiwiSaver accounts would strengthen long-term retirement savings but could simultaneously reduce the cash available for everyday costs, debt repayment or emergencies. NZIER says the effect would likely be felt most by lower-income savers with limited financial buffers.

The warning comes as KiwiSaver settings feature prominently in election-season policy debate. NZIER is calling for any changes to contribution rates to be weighed carefully against their near-term impact on household financial resilience, not just their long-term retirement benefits.
