Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sent a monetary offering Monday to the war-linked Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo, which has long been a source of diplomatic friction between Japan and its neighbors, including China, local media reported.
Takaichi sent the offering out of her own pocket for the shrine’s autumn festival, said Kyodo News Agency.
Takaichi, as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, also sent a "masakaki" ritual offering of evergreen twigs on Saturday.
Land Minister Tatsunori Ibayashi and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Election Strategy Committee Chairperson Nishimura Yasutoshi separately visited the shrine, which honors "convicted war criminals" along with millions of war dead.
Previous visits to the shrine by Japanese leaders have prompted strong criticism from China and South Korea. Japan occupied a wide area of China by the end of World War II and South Korea was under Japanese colonial rule between 1910 and 1945.
The anniversary comes amid strained Sino-Japanese ties following Takaichi's comments about a year ago suggesting that an attack on Taiwan could prompt a response by Japan's Self-Defense Forces in support of the US. China considers Taiwan as its breakaway province to be unified with the country. Taiwan insists on its independence.
