One of the billionaire heirs to Belgium’s D’Ieteren auto empire is eyeing new investments, flush with cash after selling a stake in the Volkswagen distributor to his cousin.
Olivier Perier, 55, has expanded his cash-rich family holding company, SPDG, to reach €3.5 billion ($3.9 billion) in net assets, according to regulatory filings and its website. The firm is now seeking to buy majority stakes in European companies linked to sustainable development — a long-held goal of the trained architect who serves as its chairman and chief executive officer.
“SPDG requires no fundraising, carries no LP constraints and operates on no fixed timeline,” the company says on its website, pledging to deploy capital into operational companies linked to energy, transport and infrastructure.
The step up in size of Brussels-based Societe Anonyme de Participation et de Gestion follows a roughly €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) cash infusion Perier and his mother, Catheline D’Ieteren, gained from a 2024 deal to exit D’Ieteren Group, which was founded by an ancestor at the start of the 19th century.
In addition to pocketing an extraordinary dividend and selling a nearly 17% stake to Perier’s cousin, Nicolas D’Ieteren, the pair also agreed to gradually offload their remaining holding. A filing shows it stood at just under 10% in mid-2025.
The shareholder reorganization between the two family branches blindsided D’Ieteren minority investors, and D’Ieteren Group’s stock price has yet to return to its pre-deal level. But it has served to bolster SPDG’s capacity to invest outside the auto industry. Perier and his mother may also benefit from a plan by the group for an initial public offering of its windscreen repair specialist, Belron.
SPDG declined to comment on strategy and investments beyond saying it’s focusing on “redeployment of assets.”Perier’s bid to diversify away from the industry that made his clan’s fortune mirrors moves by other ultra-wealthy people around the world — who frequently use loosely regulated family offices to invest, often in private equity. L’Oreal SA heiress Francoise Bettencourt Meyers has invested in other sectors through Tethys Invest, while Chanel Ltd. owners, the Wertheimers, do so via Mousse Partners.
Since the 2024 deal, SPDG has gone on a hiring spree and opened a new office in Paris in an 18th century mansion called Hotel de Bourrienne, which it partly owns with French investor Charles Beigbeder.
SPDG’s team has grown to about 32 people from 14 three years ago. Longtime advisers Michele Alle, Francesco D’Amico and Denis Pettiaux have remained, while Christian Cara came on board within the past year as chief investment officer. Cara previously worked for Germany’s Oetker dynasty and began his career at Boston Consulting Group.
SPDG rejects being included in the expanding world of family offices, instead saying it “operates as a family enterprise.”It calls itself an industrial holding company with two thirds of assets dedicated to investing in companies operating in the real economy and a third in financial assets. It says individual equity investments range from €200 million to €750 million, with no fixed exit horizon.
该公司的最新年度报告显示,其持有La Compagnie(商务航空)、Octave(循环能源存储)、Green Neon(风电)、Global Dental Services(诊所运营商)以及Hysopt(工程平台)等公司的股份。
The firm’s most recent annual report shows stakes in a range of companies including business-class airline La Compagnie, circular energy storage firm Octave, wind-power specialist Green Neon, clinic operator Global Dental Services and engineering platform Hysopt. It also has real-estate holdings.
“SPDG is intensifying its active holdings in operational activities linked to sustainable development, such as energy transition, infrastructure, transport and the circular economy,” it says.
Dubbed a once-in-a-generation event, the D’Ieteren family split was rooted in divisions within the secretive clan stemming from different personalities and goals, and it was designed to head off any future conflict.
D’Ieteren Group traces its roots back to 1805 when founder Jean-Joseph D’Ieteren took over a wheel workshop in Brussels, which expanded over time into carriages and then car bodies. Catheline, an art historian and philanthropist, never played an active role in the company, whereas her husband, Maurice Perier, served on the board for more than three decades and is “advisor emeritus” of SPDG.
