The letter that exposes why peace in Gaza is impossible

The letter from the son whose father was absent fighting a war started off normally enough: “Dear Dad, I miss you so much and I wish I could hug you and see you victorious.”But then, the missive from 10-year-old Ibrahim Sinwar to his Hamas leader father Yahya quickly took a dark, frightening turn: “I wish I could grow up, hold the Kalashnikov and shoot the Jews.”Shocking. But also not. In the two decades Hamas has run Gaza, both Israelis and humanitarians inside the Palestinian territory have been warning about the increased radicalisation of Gaza’s children.

This starts in schools, shockingly often financed with money from British taxpayers: Arabic lessons which bring in the words “explosive belts” worn by suicide bombers, comprehension with texts about slashing the throats of Jews, Islamic classes in which self-sacrifice and martyrdom are encouraged.

At its heart is a culture of continued “resistance” against the Jewish state. This is a curriculum of terrorism, the radicalisation of hundreds of thousands, and one reason why it is so hard to fight Hamas, which, even now, is tightening its control of the part of the Gaza Strip it remains in fierce control of.

Controlling the minds of children has always been key to the success of the totalitarian state. The Nazis had the Hitler Youth, the Soviet Union had the Young Pioneers: young ideologues who were so infused with propaganda that some of them would turn on their own parents.

In 2012, Hamas introduced Al-Futuwwa – translated as “young manhood” into government high schools, giving boys military-style instructions alongside their studies where they were familiarised with the Kalashnikovs mentioned by young Ibrahim, who escaped Gaza and is thought to be living in Turkey with his mother. Hamas summer camps similarly teach an ease with weapons and foster a culture glorifying death.

Anti-Hamas Palestinian activist Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib has talked about the rapid transition in Gaza when Hamas took power in 2007. Suddenly, fighters were coming into Gaza’s schools and showing off their guns while encouraging school trips to the border with Israel to throw rocks at soldiers. Their work in schools was echoed by the takeover of mosques where the martyrdom ideology was similarly preached.

They are taught not to be frightened of death but to look forward to “houris”, an Islamic description of paradise. Ideologue mothers – some of them at least, who came of age in Hamas schools – are encouraged to produce more and more martyrs for the cause. The total fertility rate for the Strip is 3.26 children, well above the global average. Few dare push back against the martyrdom culture in public at least. This is a fascist state where rebelling against Hamas can see you imprisoned and tortured.

It is little wonder that death notices from both Hamas and the fellow terrorist group the Palestinian Islamic Jihad from the past three years of fighting have seen boys as young as 13 and 14 in full military garb. When you think about the dead children in Gaza remember this terrible fact: Hamas and other terrorist organisations have been encouraging children to die for their futile cause for the past 20 years. What a tragedy.

Even those who are not armed fighters have been brought up to hate Jews, leading to a biggest question for any possible hopes of peace, let alone the vaunted two-state Solution. How is it possible to make peace with a people who have been brought up not just to hate but to continue to “resist” no matter the pain?

It is not something the Labour government, which reinstated cancelled funding for the aid agency UNRWA, which runs many of these schools, openly asks. The party, which recognised a Palestinian state while muttering Hamas must disappear, has given tens of millions of pounds to UNRWA since July 2024.

While it has, alongside its European allies, called for the reform of UNRWA after it emerged that some of the aid agency’s workers allegedly took part in the October 7 attacks, little has been done on the educational side.

A 2025 report by the international research group Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se) found numerous examples of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic material in textbooks despite the “reform”.

This includes a grade seven (13-year-olds) teacher guide instructing students to recreate Israelis “bashing children’s heads in front of their mothers” visually and a grade 12 textbook including a poem that urges students to “return” to Israeli cities “with a weapon in your hand”.

When the Allies finally defeated the Nazis a detailed policy of ‘“e-Nazification” re-education was started which targeted Germany’s children. This is urgently required, but who could be trusted to initiate this?

Certainly not the UK educational sector which has been overtaken by Palestinianism to the point where our biggest union, the National Education Union (NEU), has Palestine Solidarity Campaign officials in some of its most senior roles and is a regular sponsor of the demonstrations where the resistance narrative pushed by Hamas is echoed.

There is the Palestine of the imagination where, if those nasty Israelis would just stop being so cruel to the poor victims then there would be peace, and there is the Palestine of reality – glimpsed in the letter from a son to his father – where at least two generations have been taught to stop at nothing to kill Jews.
