Group plans to launch tungsten futures early in the first quarter of 2027, creating a derivatives market for the critical mineral as global prices surge.

The monthly contracts will be cash-settled against Fastmarkets’ assessment for ammonium paratungstate with a minimum 88.5% WO3 content, CIF Rotterdam and Baltimore, duty-free, CME said Monday in a statement.

The contracts would give producers, consumers and traders a way to hedge in a global tungsten market that CME says is worth more than $20 billion at current spot prices. Tungsten costs more than eight times what it did two years ago, before China imposed export controls, tightened shipments to Japan and stepped up purchases of scrap from overseas. Tungsten is considered critical by the US, the European Union, Japan and India, among other nations, because of its use in defense, aerospace and industrial applications.

Each contract will represent 88.5 metric ton units and will be listed for the current year and the following two calendar years.
