New Zealand's free trade agreement with India has officially entered into force, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay announced, calling it a milestone for exporters seeking deeper access to one of the world's largest consumer markets.
Under the agreement, 57 percent of New Zealand's exports to India are tariff-free, according to McClay. Sheep meat, wool, coal and most forestry products are among the goods that immediately benefit from the removal of duties, opening a significant new channel for the country's primary-sector exporters.
The government has promoted the agreement as part of a broader push to diversify New Zealand's trade relationships beyond its traditional partners. Further tariff reductions are expected to be phased in over the coming years, and officials said exporters are being briefed on how to make use of the new terms.
