TOKYO -- Most adult learners of English in Japan think human instructors are essential, especially such students who are using generative artificial intelligence at least part of the time, a Nikkei survey shows.

The study, outsourced to online English conversation lesson provider RareJob, was conducted from August to September with 724 students as well as 117 talent development professionals at corporations, including Japan Airlines and Santen Pharmaceutical. The survey found 48% of English learners believe opportunities to learn from human instructors are "necessary" and 37% think they are "necessary to some extent," for a combined 85%.

Only 10% said such opportunities are "not particularly necessary" and 5% said they "do not think they are necessary." For the purposes of the survey, "human instructors" included online instructors. Among those who use generative AI for English learning almost daily, 98% said human instructors are essential.

The share was 91% among those who use generative AI "occasionally," and these rates exceeded the roughly 70% for learners with less frequent usage and those who do not use it at all. The survey also found that learners with higher English proficiency were more likely to answer that human instructors were necessary.

The types of tasks that require English proficiency are changing with the emergence of AI.

Only about 20% said AI cannot replace English-speaking individuals in handling standard communications in English. But for engaging in difficult negotiations over terms and conditions or navigating complex discussions, more than 70% said these tasks require human involvement and cannot be handled by AI alone. This suggests English learners place importance not only on accurate translation skills but also on the ability to interpret the other party's responses, express their opinions and move discussions forward.

Similar tendencies appeared among employee training managers, with 95% saying workers need to be proficient in English even after generative AI becomes widely used. Though over 90% said AI has improved the efficiency of reading and writing in English, they also thought AI could not replace people in handling tough negotiations and complex discussions.

In employee training, businesses are not replacing human instructors with AI but rather using both. A total of 82% said they offer virtual or in-person lessons with teachers. Among companies that offer generative AI-based or AI app lessons, 92% also have training sessions with human instructors.

Meanwhile, 60% of respondents said they are concerned about using generative AI in their work. Asked to indicate why, with multiple responses allowed, 45% said "it is difficult to adapt wording to the other party," while 41% said they "will not be able to recognize any mistranslations" and 37% were "concerned about entering confidential information." This showed users need enough English proficiency to review what AI generates.

Assessing proficiency in business settings is challenging. Among employee training professionals, 37% said "some people can read and write in English but are not capable of engaging in real-time discussions or negotiations."
