As London considers aligning with EU trade measures targeting imports of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), Beijing has warned of “firm countermeasures” if the UK imposes restrictions.
“We hope the UK will abide by World Trade Organization rules and think twice before acting, rather than blindly following the EU,” the Ministry of Commerce said on Monday. “China will closely monitor developments and take firm countermeasures if the UK insists on restricting Chinese electric vehicles.”The ministry’s statement was in response to remarks last week by Anas Sarwar, the United Kingdom’s trade minister, who said Britain and the European Union must “work together and act in lockstep” to address China’s dominance in the automotive sector.

The British government was continuing discussions with the EU on potential tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, he said.
The UK currently imposes a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, with no additional country-specific duties, according to the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing. By contrast, the EU imposed additional duties of up to 35.3 per cent on pure electric cars from China in late 2024 after more than a year of anti-subsidy investigations.
Lower tariffs have helped make the UK a relatively more accessible market for Chinese EV makers. Chinese brands accounted for 26.7 per cent of the UK’s new-energy vehicle market in the first eight months of the year, the second-highest share among European markets after Italy, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association this month.
The UK is weighing up the imposition of additional tariffs on Chinese EVs even though Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds – Sarwar’s boss – said last week that the British government would not change its trade rules to tax Chinese vehicles because of pressure from Brussels.
On Friday, Downing Street said that it would “welcome the objective to have the UK included in the Industrial Accelerator Act” – which aims to increase manufacturing’s contribution to the EU economy. Under a Franco-German proposal, British participation in the scheme would be conditional on aligning with the EU’s trade-defence measures.
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the UK said early this month that Beijing “firmly opposed” any discriminatory tariffs or restrictions on Chinese products, warning that such measures would “only disrupt the normal order of trade and harm the interests of consumers”.
