The startup combines human recruiters with custom AI sourcing agents, betting that fast-growing companies want help hiring without another tool to manage.

For a startup trying to grow quickly, recruiting can become a job of its own. Founders need to define roles, find candidates, write outreach and keep a pipeline moving, often while managing the team those new hires will eventually join. Bringing in an agency can reduce that workload, but the fees can make each hire an expensive decision. Jooba is betting AI is allowing a new business model to emerge.

The company announced its general availability alongside $4 million in seed funding from a16z Speedrun, Scribble Ventures and Genius Ventures. Its pitch is straightforward: build custom AI agents for each individual role, then sell the service through a flat subscription.

Jooba says that approach can reduce total time to hire by 50% and recruiting fees by 90%. Those are substantial claims, but they also explain the business the startup is trying to build. Jooba wants to provide the hands-on support companies expect from a recruiting agency while passing along the savings it says automation makes possible.

A different model for startup recruiting The underlying bet is that startups want recruiting outcomes more than they want additional recruiting software.

Self-serve tools can help a company search for candidates or automate parts of outreach, but someone still has to operate those tools, decide whether their results are useful and turn a list of names into conversations with people who might actually take the job. For a small team without a dedicated recruiting function, that work often falls back to a founder or hiring manager.

Traditional agencies offer more help, but Jooba argues that their pricing has not kept pace with what technology can do. In its announcement, the company describes placement fees that can exceed $30,000 per hire, a meaningful expense for a startup filling several roles.

“Traditional recruiting agencies are using AI to do less work while still charging startups $30,000 to $50,000 a hire,” said Troy Kirwin, Partner at a16z speedrun. “As an AI-native firm, Jooba is fixing that misalignment by building a structurally better business model that serves the needs of fast growing companies much better.”AI sourcing, with human oversight Jooba’s answer is a managed service with AI operating behind the scenes.

Customers begin by meeting with a human ‘talent engineer’ to explain their hiring needs. Jooba then builds a dedicated AI sourcing agent for each open role, calibrated to the position’s technical and cultural requirements. According to the company, those agents continuously search through millions of potential candidates to identify people who could be a match.

Jooba’s human team remains involved before outreach begins. Talent engineers manually review, refine and approve the candidate pipeline, giving Jooba a checkpoint between an automated search and a message sent to a prospective hire.

That division of labor is central to the product. AI supplies the capacity to search a large candidate pool; people are responsible for reviewing what the system produces. The promise to customers is that they can delegate the sourcing operation while retaining a pipeline shaped around their specific needs.

Jooba also tries to make the service feel like an extension of the hiring team. It conducts personalized outreach under the hiring manager’s or founder’s name, operating in the background rather than introducing a separate recruiter into every candidate interaction.

Qualified, interested candidates are then routed into a dedicated Slack channel for review and interview scheduling. For a company already coordinating work in Slack, that puts the recruiting pipeline inside an existing workflow.

The choice is a practical part of Jooba’s positioning. A founder can explain the role to a person, receive candidates where the team already works and focus on deciding whom to interview. Jooba takes responsibility for the search and outreach machinery needed to get those conversations started.

The promise of faster hiring“Founders don’t have months to wait for an agency to slowly build a pipeline, which is why we optimized Jooba for sheer speed to value,” said Mark Benliyan, co-founder and CEO of Jooba. “Within 22 hours of our onboarding call, our customers are talking to their first highly qualified candidate. By letting our AI agents do the heavy lifting of sourcing, we are cutting the total time to hire by 50%, allowing lean teams to stay focused on building their product.”

The distinction between getting a first candidate conversation and completing a hire matters. A faster start can help a company build momentum, but the full hiring process still depends on interviews, decisions and whether a candidate accepts an offer. Jooba’s broader claim is that improving the sourcing stage translates into a shorter overall process.

“We’ve tried nearly every other recruiting platform and agency out there, and can confidently say Jooba has been by far the best recruiting experience we’ve ever had,” said Keyan Kazemian, co-founder and CEO of 222.

The subscription bet Beyond speed, subscription pricing is a major part of Jooba’s attempt to distinguish itself.

A flat fee gives companies a different way to budget for recruiting from a large charge attached to an individual placement. Jooba says its flexible subscriptions allow startups to scale hiring capacity up or down as their needs change.

With its seed round and general availability, Jooba is entering the market with a clear proposition: startups should be able to buy a managed recruiting service at a price that reflects the work AI can automate.

The test will be whether it can keep delivering candidates quickly, preserve the human judgment customers are paying for and make the subscription economics work as hiring needs change. If it can, Jooba could give growing companies a compelling reason to rethink both the recruiting agency and the software they use to hire.
