A Washington lobbyist sued the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and its acting chairman on Tuesday, alleging the agency unlawfully barred him from its facilities and retaliated against him over his work for clients.
Lobbyist Edward Krenik said in his lawsuit in Washington federal court that the consumer product agency accused him of “disruptive” behavior and declared him a threat without justification.
Krenik, represented by the conservative-leaning New Civil Liberties Alliance, said a series of rulings against President Donald Trump’s administration bolstered his retaliation claims.
He pointed to court rulings issued last year that blocked White House executive orders targeting four law firms and restricted their ability to interact with federal agencies. Krenik also cited another DC federal judge’s order commanding the White House to restore access to CNN and several other media outlets. The consumer product agency had no immediate comment.
Kara Rollins, a lawyer for Krenik, said in a statement, "the right to petition keeps government answerable to the governed, and it means nothing if officials can banish those with whom they disagree.”Krenik, who owns and operates the government affairs firm NorthStar EK LLC, has been a registered lobbyist for more than 23 years. He previously worked as an aide to lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
His lawsuit said most of his current work involves advocacy for manufacturers and trade associations before the consumer product agency. He said that on an unnamed client's behalf he had urged Peter Feldman, the agency’s acting chairman, to take certain actions, and had told Feldman he was authorized to take the client's concerns to the White House.
The lawsuit said the White House later contacted Feldman and “admonished” him, and that he was told in August that he was prohibited from entering any Consumer Product Safety Commission building.
Krenik said a consumer product agency official hadaccused him in August without evidence of “repeated abusive and disruptive behavior,” including "attempts to contact staff using improper and unauthorized communication channels.”The lawsuit said Krenik as a private lobbyist has no legal obligation to use any specific communication method when contacting a government official.
