Artificial intelligence is used in the fight against radicalization online — now it will help protect MPs CANBERRA – The Australian Federal Police wants to bolster protection of parliamentarians by using technological capabilities including artificial intelligence developed for counter-terrorism and detecting radicalization online and applying them to threats against public officials.
At a press conference on Wednesday to discuss charges laid against the 43-year-old alleged to have attacked independent MP Helen Haines with his vehicle, AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett conceded it was not feasible to provide personal protection for all 226 federal parliamentarians. She said that increased technological capabilities are part of the solution.
The AFP’s national security investigations teams “are charging almost one individual every week for targeting commonwealth parliamentarians or high office-holders”, Barrett said on Wednesday. Reports of harassing and threatening behavior towards high office holders have increased in the past year from 951 to 1,067.
While AFP had no “specific intelligence” leading up to the Haines attack, Barrett said “we absolutely do proactively use online capabilities to gather intelligence. A huge part of my priority as the commissioner is: how do we better utilize technology?”
