China Cosco Shipping Holdings, the country’s largest ocean carrier, has prioritised resilience as it rolls out an emergency response system to cope with rising geopolitical conflicts, infrastructure bottlenecks and climate-related disruptions.

The company is launching fresh capacity and new trade routes as part of the plan, as it looks to ensure its supply chains can withstand a mix of potential shocks, according to chairman Wan Min.

“We believe that true resilience is not merely restricted to a single route,” he said at the North Bund Summit, a shipping industry conference, in Shanghai on Tuesday.

“A fully resilient shipping system should comprise adequate backup to ensure a safe and stable operation through the entire supply chain.”Cosco had also added road transport into its routes as a way of dodging the impact of conflicts in the Middle East, the chairman added.

The global container shipping industry has been racing to implement structural re-routing strategies since the US-Israel war on Iran erupted in late February.

The tensions have not only disrupted shipping traffic in the Middle East, but have also raised energy costs for container lines, forcing firms to increase freight rates in response.

Wan said massive investment in infrastructure and transport equipment would be needed to adapt to military conflicts and unexpected climate-related disruptions, with 80 per cent of global trade currently being conducted via ocean freight.

Worries are mounting that a massive construction of new vessels will immensely add new capacity that may become redundant in futureZhang Jieshu, Shanghai International Shipping Institute Container ocean freight rates have jumped 130 per cent since February amid the prolonged Middle East conflicts, according to a report released by brokerage firm Jefferies earlier this month.

Changes to shipping routes could increase freight costs and affect the movement of goods across major global trade corridors, it added.

Hong Kong-listed Cosco reported a net profit of 13.4 billion yuan (US$2 billion) for the first half of 2026, down 23.6 per cent from the same period last year. Its revenue dropped 2.6 per cent to 111.9 billion yuan.

The company invests in and operates 65 port terminals and runs more than 350 container lines around the world.

Global container lines have also been ordering more vessels to raise their capacity as they implement their re-routing strategies.

“Freight rates look set to grow since an end to the geopolitical conflict is not in sight yet,” said Zhang Jieshu, secretary general of the Shanghai International Shipping Institute, a government-backed research organisation.

“But worries are mounting that a massive construction of new vessels will immensely add new capacity that may become redundant in future.”The two-day North Bund conference, starting on Tuesday, attracted hundreds of government officials including Minister of Transport Liu Wei and executives with major shipping and aviation companies to discuss promoting the resilient development of the global logistics industry.

Shanghai has been the world’s biggest container port since 2010, when it overtook Singapore. Ports in Shanghai handled 55.1 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in 2025, 6.9 per cent more than a year earlier.
