An Atlanta-based chapter of Planned Parenthood has been sued by six former employees who say they were fired for speaking out against new leadership that backed away from advocacy for abortion rights and LGBTQ issues.

The complaint filed Monday in Atlanta federal court claims that Planned Parenthood Southeast installed a new executive leadership team in 2024 that discouraged staff from focusing on abortion and sought to curtail services and outreach to the transgender community.

The plaintiffs alleged the changes came at a time when the group should have been stepping up its advocacy in the wake of the 2022 US Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

Instead, PPSE's then-CEO, Mairo Akpose, and former Executive Director Karen Rene illegally retaliated against the plaintiffs by terminating them for pushing back, the lawsuit claims.

The complaint names Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the national organization, as a defendant, claiming it exercises significant control over PPSE's personnel affairs including hiring and day-to-day management.

One of the plaintiffs, former organizer Kim Luong, initially filed the lawsuit last month. The amended complaint filed this week adds five plaintiffs, including Kaylah Oates-Marable, who was PPSE's Georgia state director, and staffers who worked in public policy, education, and communications.

PPSE in a statement said the group believes that every person deserves to make their own healthcare decisions, including whether to continue a pregnancy, and has continued to provide high-quality care to the LGBTQ community.

"We strive to create a professional work environment where every member of our team feels valued and respected," the group said. Planned Parenthood Federation of America did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.

Akpose separately sued PPSE last week alleging that she was treated differently from other executives and ultimately forced out last December as she is Black and a practicing Christian. The organization has not responded to her lawsuit. Akpose did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Akpose was named CEO of PPSE in 2024 after serving for a year as the organization's "chief people and culture officer." According to the new lawsuit, after President Donald Trump won the 2024 election, Akpose told senior staffers that one of her goals was to rebrand PPSE's mission as less centered on abortion rights. She allegedly told Oates-Marable and others that “we talk about abortion too much," even as the Georgia legislature was considering a bill that would have banned all abortions without exception. Georgia bans abortion after six weeks with limited exceptions.

The Trump administration has targeted Planned Parenthood by measures that include cutting grants, and seeking to deprive the group of crucial Medicaid funding. The administration has also waged an aggressive campaign to limit legal protections and healthcare services for transgender people.

The plaintiffs said that Akpose ordered them to stop including LGBTQ policy issues on a "score card" for state legislators and not to participate in Pride-themed events.

Five of the plaintiffs say they were laid off or fired between July and September 2025 after raising concerns to Akpose and others about the shift in priorities.

Jaylen Black, who was the group's vice president of communications and marketing, said she was fired last December after being denied accommodations for injuries she sustained from an accident at a concert.

The lawsuit claims the plaintiffs' objections amounted to protected activity under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and accuses PPSE and the national organization of retaliation. Black also alleges she was discriminated against because of a disability.

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. The case is Black v. Planned Parenthood Southeast, US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, No. 1:26-cv-05458.
