Iron ore miner Fortescue Ltd. said a standoff with China’s state-backed buyer China Mineral Resources Group Co. may impact its full-year results, after quarterly shipments fell.
Fortescue has been locked in negotiations with CMRG over supply contract pricing for months, and is currently operating under short-term agreements. The group has reportedly coordinated with steel mills in China to delay cargoes and limit buying.
The miner said iron ore shipments had fallen 6% in the three months through September from the year before, and sales were even lower at 42.9 million tons of the key steelmaking ingredient.
“If negotiations with CMRG are not concluded by calendar year-end, operations may be affected,” Fortescue said in the filing. “Guidance is subject to negotiations with CMRG.”The Australian miner has attempted to shore up its relationship with China through equipment orders and by committing to loans from Chinese banks. It has also explored diversifying sales into alternative markets including India and Southeast Asia.
