New Zealand's state broadcaster TVNZ faces its first staff strike in two decades after the E tū union rejected a 2.5% pay offer that workers say falls well short of inflation.

Staff at Television New Zealand are preparing to walk out for the first time in 20 years after negotiations over pay broke down, the E tū union said. The union said TVNZ had offered a 2.5% pay rise, well short of the inflation workers have faced, and that members voted strongly in favour of strike action after months of talks produced no better offer.

The dispute threatens to disrupt news and entertainment programming at the state-owned broadcaster, which has already cut jobs and budgets in recent years as advertising revenue migrated to streaming platforms and social media. Union representatives said staff felt they were being asked to absorb the cost of the broadcaster's financial pressure through pay that does not keep pace with the cost of living.

TVNZ management has not detailed how it will keep programmes running if the strike goes ahead, and further talks between the two sides are expected before any walkout date is confirmed. The standoff comes as other New Zealand employers face similar pressure from unions pointing to a stubborn cost-of-living squeeze even as headline inflation figures have begun to ease.
