Malaysian police have arrested a 16-year-old student after he live-streamed an attack on a teacher with an axe at a private school in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state.

Viral clips circulating online appear to show the teenager preparing for the attack inside a toilet with a mobile phone strapped to his head to live-stream the assault. Shaky footage believed to be from his live broadcast was briefly posted online before being taken down.

The live-streamed attack has raised concerns across Southeast Asia, coming just two months after a similar incident left a student dead before the attacker died by suicide at a private school in the Philippines.
During the August 18 attack in the Philippines, ninth-grader Mohammad Mael Jalani used a body camera to film himself shooting at teachers and students at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
“He entered and started indiscriminately firing, hitting a Grade 10 student on the fourth floor,” Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla told reporters. “He showed this on Facebook Live starting [from] when he was climbing the stairs, but there were only snippets.”Philippine authorities have stepped up online monitoring following another fatal school shooting in Banga, South Cotabato, last month.
“The trend has changed. Incidents are now more on the internet, in cyberspace,” regional police director Allan Manibog said, according to the Philippine Inquirer.
