AI Put the Pink Panther in France’s Protests. It’s a Marvelous Idea

In happier times: The US-conceived Pink Panther among native French-speaking cartoon characters Samsam, Lapin Cretin and Smurfette at the Elysee Palace in 2013. Photographer: PHILIPPE WOJAZER/AFP/Getty Images

As horrific as the images of looting and arson in Paris over the weekend were, I was most unnerved by the video footage from Reuters of a man and woman calmly having evening drinks at an outdoor table of a cafe not far from the Arc de Triomphe. A fire burns in the near distance, dramatically reflected in the window of the establishment, where a server in white attends to at least one customer inside.

There is an almost premeditated, cinematographic light on the couple, one of whom has nonchalantly lit a cigarette; it is so composed — like a tableau vivant — that the art historian Seema Rao compared it to baroque-era tenebrism, an approach where artists like Caravaggio took the elegant chiaroscuro developed by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and theatrically turned up the menace. If it were not for the Reuters imprimatur, I would have assumed the video was generated by artificial intelligence.

Critics including Rao have contrasted the artsy reality of the Reuters clip against a number of clearly AI-generated videos of the Pink Panther dashing through water cannonades and giving the finger to France’s national police, with perfectly calibrated color contrasts (pink pops against gray) and the comedic satisfaction of what’s basically a stuffed toy confounding the cops. To many, the fakery diminishes the righteousness of young people’s protests against the neglect and degradation of their schools, among other social and economic issues they’ve courageously brought into the streets.

But I think there’s more to this than phony cartoon cosplay. The agitator may yet take its place among other emblems of outrage Gen Z has adopted around the world, from Indonesia to India to France, most prominently the straw-hat Jolly Roger flag from the Japanese manga .

First, a brief history of how a minor Hollywood icon became a naturalized French citizen. The animated Pink Panther was a filigree accompanying the end credits to the 1963 movie of the same name, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers as the bumbling French detective, Inspector Clouseau. It served as the cartoon incarnation of a rosy flaw in a huge diamond central to the plot. Conceived by Friz Freleng — the legendary animator behind Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig — the feline was so popular that it became the star of an Oscar-winning animated short as well as a long-running television series that aired in the US on NBC from 1969 to 1978.

The same series became a children’s programming staple in France, circulating until 2011. It needed little translation because — with rare exceptions — the panther and most of the other characters did not speak. The cat had become so domesticated in France that it was represented (by a human in costume) alongside native French-speaking cartoon personalities like Samsam, Lapin Cretin and Smurfette for an event at the presidential palace in 2013.

Against this cross-cultural context rose the activist group Les Pantheres Roses, a queer/feminist group that was a constant presence at LGBTQ+ marches and protests supporting immigrant and minority rights. The name was also a playful homage to the Black Panthers, the militant Marxist, Black power organization in the US. Les Pantheres Roses were active from 2003 until about 2013. That and the longevity of the series in France covered the coming of age of both millennials and Gen Z. And so the appearance of the Pink Panther on the side of young French protesters isn’t really gratuitous.

The straw-hat Jolly Roger flag from One Piece in France, along with the Palestinian banner, another popular symbol of protest.

Can a relative of the Looney Tunes menagerie be taken seriously as part of the language of global protest? It would be weirdly appropriate if it joined the ranks of , which has seen its pirate flag appear not only in France this past week, but in demonstrations in Milan, Albania and Brussels. It was also widely displayed at protests in India this year and at the 2025 demonstrations in Indonesia and Nepal.

The appeal of the pirates of — a comic-book series created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997 that now has 600 million copies in circulation worldwide — is forthright: Its crew of misfits opposes the domination of the World Government, very much the way Gen Z today sees a global confluence of ruling oldsters who have monopolized all of society’s benefits and left them nothing. (Alas, the allure of Japanese pop culture also has a dark side in the criminals who took advantage of the protests to loot shops specializing in manga, Pokemon cards and figurines of anime characters.)

The French also, perhaps more than most people, understand the power of semiotics. Already the protesters have taken a cringey police message meant to infiltrate protesters and turned it into a cri de coeur. Agents trying to sound like Arabic-speaking street youth reportedly stumbled badly with dialectical differences during an alleged attempt at entrapment, leading to the nonsensical opening line, (In the name of God, it's the shadows). Protesters repeated the phrase like a taunt, turning the words of the establishment against itself. Surely the Pink Panther could be a similarly powerful (if mostly silent) heckler against the authorities.

But aren’t the latest incarnations of the Pink Panther AI? And isn’t that technology part of the evil plot to take jobs (and perhaps life) away from us all? Yeah, but wouldn’t it be funny — and fittingly subversive — if the next big protest in France had humans in Pink Panther costumes cavorting through the crowds?

AI may have prompted the current panther images, but the future can still be in human hands — if zippers don’t get in the way.
