German police are examining a letter by a left-wing group claiming responsibility for an arson attack that destroyed three military trucks last month, officials confirmed Thursday.
The anonymous post on an internet platform was signed by a group calling itself the “Red Workers' Action Group Ulrike Meinhof.”The letter asserts that the group set the vehicles on fire on the grounds of a civilian repair workshop.
“On Sept. 25, thousands of school students were on strike and in the streets to demonstrate against conscription, militarism, and war,” the group said. “Of course we workers also want to contribute and have therefore started this concrete disarmament initiative. War to the war!”The vehicles were logistics trucks belonging to the German armed forces and had been left for maintenance at a workshop near Magdeburg, according to Der Spiegel magazine. Police later determined the fire was arson and secured evidence at the scene State criminal police (LKA) confirmed they are aware of the letter.
“It is being examined, but investigations continue in all directions,” Uwe Bachmann, an LKA spokesman, told local media. He added that further comment was not possible due to the ongoing probe.
The claiming group takes its name from Ulrike Meinhof, a founding member of the Red Army Faction. The RAF, a far-left terror group active in the 1970s, carried out bombings, kidnappings, and other attacks before its leaders were imprisoned. Meinhof died in custody in 1976.
