Germany’s right-wing AfD party has asked the government whether public institutions are reporting incidents of unidentified aerial phenomena, and whether any findings exist on the topic.
The parliamentary question, signed by the party’s co-chairs Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, follows recent US Pentagon reports, congressional hearings involving pilots and officials, and scientific work by NASA.
In the inquiry, lawmakers asked which ministries or offices are responsible for receiving and evaluating reports of unidentified aerial phenomena and since when records have been kept. They also inquired whether specific terms and definitions such as “UAP” or “UFO” are used and whether standardized federal guidelines exist for public officials.
The Defense Ministry replied to the parliamentary question on behalf of the government, and the response was published on the parliament’s website this week. “There is no information available regarding unidentified aerial phenomena,” the ministry said, adding that the government uses no specific terms or definitions such as “UFO,” “UAP” or “unidentifiable contacts.”The ministry said monitoring of German airspace is handled by the interior, transport and defense ministries, while tracking objects near Earth in space is the job of the research, technology and space and defense ministries. Officials added that there are no special reporting channels for pilots, air traffic controllers and other personnel to report sightings of unidentified objects in the air or space.
