Fargo & Co. tapped one of its consumer bank leaders, Saul Van Beurden, to fully focus on the company’s artificial-intelligence efforts.

Van Beurden had been tasked last year with leading the firm’s AI strategy, on top of his duties as a co-chief executive officer of Wells Fargo’s consumer banking and lending business. As part of the shuffle, Kleber Santos will take over as the sole CEO of the consumer banking and lending operation, according to a statement Thursday.

In his new role, Van Beurden will work closely with the bank’s head of technology, Bridget Engle. Both Van Beurden and Santos will continue to report to CEO Charlie Scharf, and remain on the company’s operating committee, according to the statement.

Last November, Wells Fargo combined its consumer and small banking business with its consumer lending operation into a single group. Before the combination, Van Beurden oversaw the bank’s branch network and its work with small businesses, whereas Santos focused on consumer lending.
