After period of estrangement, Caroline Darian says she and her mom are 'now, more than ever, together' Just because you can't remember it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

That's the message behind a new public awareness campaign about drug-facilitated sexual abuse — also known as chemical submission — led by Caroline Darian and featuring her mother, Gisèle Pelicot.

Pelicot became a global symbol of resistance when she waived her right to anonymity during the trial of her husband, Dominique Pelicot, who was convicted in 2024 of repeatedly drugging and raping her over the course of a decade at their home in France, and inviting other men to do the same.

"Drug-facilitated abuse is a silent form of violence. It really robs a person of consciousness, freedom and even memory," Darian told As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal "The purpose of this campaign was really to bring the invisible to the light and give the voice to the unspeakable, to see the invisible." The campaign, which launched in France last month, was spearheaded by MendorsPas (Don't Put Me To Sleep), an organization Darian founded after the trial to raise awareness about chemical submission and connect victims to support services.

It features up-close portraits of chemical submission victims, including one of her mother.

Each portrait features a deliberately incomplete sentence. For example: "For years, I was ____ by my husband," or "On my anniversary, I was ____ by my father-in-law." The line representing the missing word appears over the subject's mouth.

"The word is there but cannot be spoken," reads a press release by Havas Paris, the publicity firm behind the ads. "A reminder that drug-facilitated sexual assault is not limited to a specific place or context and can be perpetrated by someone close to the victim." About 75 per cent of victims of drug-facilitated sexual abuse know their perpetrators, according to MendorsPas and the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.

"It could be a friend, it could be parents, it could be a colleague," Darian said. "It's not necessarily only happening at parties. Most of the time, it happens at home with someone that you know." A period of estrangement It's an issue Darian knows all too intimately. Two photos, showing her in her bedroom in underwear, were recovered from her father’s computer. In them, she appears asleep or unconscious.

In her 2025 memoir, I'll Never Call Him Dad Again, she revealed that she believes her father sexually abused her, too. Though her father was convicted of sharing intimate images of Darian without her permission, he has denied all other allegations.

While promoting the book, Darian told the Telegraph that her mother didn't believe or support her and that she could never forgive her for that. For a period, the two were estranged.

But today, Darian says, she and Pelicot are allies in the fight against drug-faciliated sexual violence. "We are now, more than ever, together," Darian said.

In an interview earlier this year with CBC’s The Current, Pelicot said she was angry on her daughter’s behalf and hoped that she would get answers.

"Today, each of us is trying to heal as best we can, but we each felt it differently and had different kinds of suffering," she said. "I mean, for the kids, this was their dad … and that all crashed down." Pelicot, who waived her right to anonymity during her then-husband's trial, has become an international figurehead for victims of sexual violence.

On Wednesday, the mother and daughter appeared together at a gala in New York City for the human rights organization Equality Now and were jointly awarded the 2026 Trailblazer Award for their advocacy.

It's a huge step for us," Darian said. "We are really grateful."

Darian to Jane Doe: 'You don't have to bear the shame' Darian says she hopes the campaign will help end the stigma and silence around chemical submission, encourage people to seek help and, when possible, undergo toxicology tests to confirm their suspicions.

Already, since the Pelicot verdict, several women have come forward with their stories of chemical submission .

In the U.K. this summer, a man pleaded to repeatedly drugging and raping his girlfriend over the course of a decade and inviting others to do the same. Four men in Germany were convicted of drugging and raping several women and sharing footage and tips in private messaging groups about how to get away with it. "I think now no one can ignore what chemical submission is," Darian said.

This fall, women online have been rallying around Jane Doe, an anonymous student at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., who alleges she was gang raped by fraternity members while heavily under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Asked about the case, Darian offered words of encouragement for Jane Doe and a call to action for everyone else.

"You don't have to bear the shame on your shoulder, and you must stay strong, and you must believe in yourself and go on speaking out," she said.

"It's not only, you know, women's issue. It concerns everyone. It is about an entire society, the responsibility to support victims and to make that change." Interview with Caroline Darian produced by Leslie Ammison
