Victoria state has approved the production license for a A$1 billion ($700 million) natural gas project to help avoid a forecast gas shortage.

GB Energy Pty Ltd.’s Golden Beach Gas Project will start producing from 2028, with storage to come online a year later, according to a government statement. The facility will boost the state’s gas storage capacity by around 70%, it said.

Australia’s populous east coast is forecast to face a domestic natural gas shortfall toward the end of the decade, and industry and government have promoted the fuel as a backup when wind and solar output is low. Climate groups say that approach risks undermining the country’s emissions targets.

The project will be able to deliver 500 terajoules per day of withdrawal capacity, according to GB’s website. That’s more than half of the state’s maximum daily demand in the year through June 2026.
