Texas Shuts Down Automated Permitting Portal and Suspends 17 Data Center Approvals The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has shut down its automated permit filing system, STEERS, and suspended 17 stormwater construction permits for data center projects.
The move occurred after reports from watchdog groups FracTracker Alliance and Public Citizen revealed that the portal continued issuing automated approvals, including for OpenAI and Amazon developments, despite Governor Greg Abbott's September call to pause data center permitting. TCEQ announced that the system was temporarily disabled to transition to manual staff reviews. The agency did not respond to requests for comment.
