Natural gas power generation in Australia’s main grid fell to its lowest third-quarter average in more than a quarter of a century, as a surge in battery capacity reduced the need for the fossil fuel.

Average generation from gas in the National Electricity Market was 881 megawatts in the three months through September, the lowest for a third quarter since 2000, the Australian Energy Market Operator said in its Quarterly Energy Dynamics report on Friday. Coal’s share of total output slipped to 52.2%, while renewables supplied a record 44.3%.

Batteries are helping cut the reliance on fossil fuels for backup, with grid-scale storage units exceeding the contribution from gas in the evening peak for the first time in any quarter, AEMO said.
