Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, saying attempts to create “disorder” at home risk damaging the country’s standing at a time of growing global economic and geopolitical tensions.

“Today, when there is so much disarray in the world, the image of a strong India should be conveyed globally,” Modi said at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi on Thursday. He accused Gandhi and his opposition, Congress party of seeking to “tarnish India’s reputation” and said that while the world was searching for a “new order,” some people were “dreaming of disorder” in India.

Modi’s comments mark his most direct comment on a dispute that has grown from protests over voter rolls into a broader political confrontation with the government. Gandhi and other opposition leaders are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision, claims rejected by the Election Commission and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The prime minister’s remark follows similar criticism from senior members of his government, including Home Minister Amit Shah, who on Thursday rejected the Indian National Congress Party’s allegations of “vote theft” and said protests wouldn’t help political parties win elections.

Earlier, senior Congress leader Kumari Selja said the protests over the voter-roll revision had been peaceful and involved opposition lawmakers and civil society groups. She accused the government of using heavy security to suppress the demonstrations.

The dispute is escalating as Modi seeks to cast India as a rising power in a fractured global economy. He said trade was increasingly being “weaponized,” technology had become an arena for competition and conflict, and key shipping routes were emerging as centers of geopolitical tension.
