The EU Commission on Friday said it had opened an antitrust investigation into Swiss company Omya, for possible abuse of its dominant position in the supply of calcium carbonates to producers of paper products.
The Commission said Omya might have required customers in the paper industry to purchase all or most of their calcium carbonates from it. Omya did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Calcium carbonates are an important input in the paper manufacturing process, where they are used to reduce production costs and improve brightness, opacity, smoothness and printability of paper and cardboard, the Commission said.
It said Omya's practices might have limited the ability of other suppliers of calcium carbonates to effectively compete for customers in Europe.
"Competitive and affordable supplies of calcium carbonates are important, because these can reduce input costs for paper mills and ultimately benefit consumers of paper and cardboard products," it added.
