US Investor-Owned Utilities Surpass Public Providers with 23% Higher Electricity Rates

Between 2020 and 2025, investor-owned electric rates climbed 34%, outpacing the 24% rate of inflation and public utility increases of 19%. Adjusted for inflation, investor-owned electricity rates rose 7.9%, while public and co-op rates declined 4.3%. Based on Energy Information Administration data, investor-owned rates rose faster than nonprofit alternatives in 38 of 48 states, led by sharp price increases at utilities such as New York State Electric & Gas and San Diego Gas & Electric.
