TOKYO -- JFE Steel will build a new blast furnace at a steel plant jointly operated with Indian peer JSW Steel, doubling the facility's crude steel production capacity, the Japanese company said on Thursday.

With its domestic operations struggling amid an influx of Chinese products, JFE is looking to India's growing market as a key part of its growth strategy.

In June, JFE acquired a 50% stake in Bhushan Power & Steel, a subsidiary of JSW Steel, for 157.5 billion rupees ($1.66 billion). The companies launched a new joint venture called JSW JFE Steel. The blast furnace will be installed at the venture's steelworks in the eastern state of Odisha.

The plant currently operates two blast furnaces with an annual crude steel production capacity of 4.5 million metric tons. JFE aims to raise that to 9.5 million tons by 2030 with the new furnace.

The investment will also cover converters used to refine molten iron produced by the blast furnace, as well as a hot-strip mill that heats and rolls steel slabs. JFE did not disclose the investment amount. Estimates suggest that constructing a new blast furnace in India typically requires hundreds of millions to billions of dollars.

JFE first invested in JSW Steel in 2010 and has since collaborated with the company on technologies including automotive steel sheets. In 2023, the two companies established a separate joint venture and began building a plant for electrical steel sheets, a high-grade steel used in transformers and other equipment, in the southern state of Karnataka and elsewhere.

Japan's steel market has become increasingly challenging because of low-cost imported Chinese steel products. With little expectations of long-term growth in domestic demand, Japanese steelmakers are stepping up their activities in India.

Nippon Steel jointly acquired a major Indian steelmaker with Europe's ArcelorMittal in 2019 for 770 billion yen ($4.92 billion at current rates). The company is investing 410 billion rupees in a plant in plant in western India to build two new blast furnaces, raising annual crude steel capacity to 15 million tons from 9 million tons. It is also planning additional steelworks projects.

India produced 165.5 million tons of crude steel in 2025, according to the World Steel Association, up 11% from the previous year. The country's market, the second largest in the world after China, is expected to continue growing. The Indian government has also moved to protect the domestic steel industry, imposing tariffs on certain products to curb inflows of low-cost Chinese steel.
