TOKYO -- The leaders of Japan and the Pacific island country of Micronesia agreed to work together to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific during a Friday meeting in Tokyo.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Wesley Simina, president of the Federated States of Micronesia, and called for the countries to "become more resilient and prosperous together." The Japanese government sees Micronesia as a strategically important country due to its proximity to the second island chain -- an arc of Pacific island countries featured in some strategic thinking.
Simina said he looks forward to discussing furthering the bilateral partnership as well as working together "to promote peace, friendship and cooperation in a free and open Indo-Pacific." In addition, the Japanese government has decided to start a study on providing Micronesia with a cargo-passenger ship through Tokyo's Official Development Assistance program.
The vessel would improve travel through Micronesia, which consists of more than 600 islands. The Japan International Cooperation Agency will conduct the survey on local needs. Japan is scheduled to host the eleventh Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting to be held in Yokohama next summer.
