The National Women’s Soccer League and the union representing its players reached a settlement to increase how many players can make the league’s highest salary.

The agreement came after the league created a mechanism to allow star players like Trinity Rodman to be paid $1 million outside the salary cap, if they met league certain criteria. Now all players are eligible to receive this kind of contract.

This change has the potential for more players to receive higher salaries, which will help the NWSL retain top talent and compete with leagues in other countries that don’t have salary caps. The league’s salary cap stands at $3.7 million for 2026 and rises to $4.4 million next year.

The so-called “Rodman rule” was introduced in December after the league rejected Rodman’s contract with the Washington Spirit, arguing that the deal wasn’t within the “spirit” of the collective bargaining agreement. Rodman, one of the league’s biggest stars, was eligible for free agency after the 2025 season, raising the possibility that she could leave the NWSL for an overseas league.

The agreement also expands performance bonus opportunities and strengthens transparency of revenue-sharing contributions to the team salary cap, meaning the league must provide financial records necessary to verify media and sponsorship revenue calculations.
