Artificial intelligence (AI) could help people who think and work differently find better opportunities in the workplace. Palantir CEO Alex Karp has highlighted how neurodivergent people could benefit as AI changes the way companies operate.

Who are neurodivergent people? Neurodivergent people include those with conditions such as autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. They may process information, communicate or approach tasks differently from people who are not neurodivergent. How AI could help neurodivergent workersAs businesses adopt AI, they may need to rethink what makes someone a valuable employee. Different ways of thinking could become more useful as companies change how they complete tasks and solve problems, Fortune reported.

Wendler said many workplaces have been designed around the strengths and needs of neurotypical employees, meaning people whose brains process information in ways considered typical. This can make it difficult for neurodivergent employees to fit in at work and do their best. Wendler said many workplaces are designed to support people who think and work in typical ways, while the needs and strengths of neurodivergent people are often overlooked. Wall Street week ahead: Big tech earnings and Fed decision to test US stock rallyAs AI changes how businesses operate, companies may get a chance to review their workplace rules and make them more supportive of different ways of thinking and working.

Instead of expecting everyone to work in the same way, employers could make better use of different thinking styles, Wendler said, according to Fortune.AI could create new workplace opportunitiesWendler said the rise of AI is creating a situation in which employees are entering unfamiliar territory.

This could give neurodivergent workers a better chance to compete because companies and employees are still learning how AI will change jobs.“We are now entering a new frontier, where everybody is on more equal footing because nobody really knows how we navigate this new chapter, or what AI is going to do, or the future of work,” he said, according to Fortune.

Some neurodivergent employees may be especially eager to learn and use AI tools because traditional workplace systems have not always met their needs. These tools could help them manage work more easily, Wendler said. How AI tools can support neurodivergent employeesNeurodivergent employees can use large language models (LLMs), the technology behind many AI chatbots, to divide difficult assignments into manageable steps. These tools can also help them organise tasks and communicate more clearly, according to Wendler.

While some employees have pushed back against the introduction of AI in the workplace, neurodivergent workers may see the technology as a useful way to handle certain work challenges. However, their willingness to adopt AI may differ from person to person, Fortune reported.SAP, Microsoft and Dell support neurodivergent workersDespite growing awareness, several businesses have taken time to change their hiring practices and workplace policies to help neurodivergent people succeed, Wendler said.

Software company SAP has spent more than a decade working to include neurodivergent people in its hiring process and support them after they join the company. Its Autism at Work programme is one example of these efforts, according to Fortune. Technology companies Microsoft and Dell have introduced initiatives to recruit and support neurodivergent employees.

These efforts include changing traditional interview practices, which may not always allow neurodivergent candidates to show their abilities effectively, Fortune reported. Banking company JPMorgan Chase has also taken steps to recruit and support neurodivergent people. These initiatives reflect a gradual move by some major companies towards more inclusive hiring practices, according to Fortune. Trump faces voter backlash as US prices rise 5.4% and gas prices climbPalantir offers neurodivergent fellowship with high salariesPalantir runs a Neurodivergent Fellowship as part of its recruitment efforts. The programme is designed to recruit people who think differently and could contribute to the company's work.

The salary range listed for the Palantir programme is an estimated $110,000 to $200,000 annually. However, participants are expected to meet the same performance standards as other Palantir engineers, according to the job posting cited by Fortune.

The company's job posting says neurodivergent people could have an advantage as AI becomes more important.

It points to skills such as recognising patterns, thinking beyond conventional approaches and focusing deeply on tasks.“The current LLM tech landscape positions them to dominate. Pattern recognition. Non-linear thinking. Hyperfocus. The cognitive traits that make the neurodivergent different are precisely what make them exceptional in an AI-driven world,” the Palantir job posting said, according to Fortune.AI does not make every neurodivergent worker a geniusWendler warned against the idea that all neurodivergent people automatically have special talents that make them better suited to the AI revolution. He said this view creates unrealistic expectations about their abilities.

Wendler said portraying neurodivergent people as extraordinary geniuses can overlook the contributions of those who do not have exceptional or rare abilities.

He warned that this way of thinking can minimise the value of many neurodivergent employees. Conditions such as ADHD, autism and dyslexia can create difficulties in both personal life and the workplace. Wendler said these challenges should not be ignored while discussing the possible advantages of neurodivergence. Although AI may give neurodivergent workers new ways to manage tasks and demonstrate their abilities, companies still need to address workplace barriers.

Wendler said the changes brought by AI offer an opportunity for neurodivergent people to make progress and contribute meaningfully. Wendler said neurodivergent people should not have to prove they possess extraordinary abilities to be valued at work. He stressed that every person can have something meaningful to contribute. “A person does not need to be a genius superhuman, you know, Spider-Man, to be able to have something to offer and to deserve a seat at the table,” Wendler said, according to Fortune.
