Mexico’s Superior Audit Office opened an investigation Friday into suspected irregularities in contracts for election-related supplies, including possible conflicts of interest, collusion and the diversion of public funds. Attention has centered on Taddei’s reported ties to a businessman whose companies have secured contracts.

“The responsibility of organizing elections goes far beyond any individual,” Taddei said in the statement. “This decision reflects my conviction that protecting the Institute and allowing it to continue fulfilling its constitutional mission must always take precedence over any immediate or personal interest.”Scrutiny has also extended to appointments within the electoral institute, with some officials reportedly having previous ties to companies under investigation. No personal wrongdoing by Taddei has been established yet.
