Satellite imagery analysed by a defence researcher suggests China has quietly begun limited production of a next-generation airborne early-warning aircraft meant to track targets over the Pacific.

New satellite images reviewed by an independent defence imagery analyst suggest China may have quietly started limited production of its next-generation airborne early-warning aircraft, with what appear to be production examples spotted parked at a factory site as early as April this year.

If confirmed and brought fully into service, the aircraft would give the People's Liberation Army a stronger ability to detect threats, track targets and coordinate air operations across the western Pacific, including in any future standoff involving Taiwan and the United States. Beijing has not publicly commented on the production claims, and independent verification remains difficult.

Defence analysts say the timing fits a broader pattern of China steadily modernising its airborne surveillance fleet as regional tensions simmer over Taiwan and disputed waters further south. Foreign militaries, including the United States and Japan, are expected to watch closely for further satellite evidence or any official confirmation in the coming months.
