The Czech government backed a proposal to entrench the koruna in the nation’s constitution, potentially setting a political obstacle for future administrations seeking to adopt the European Union’s single currency.
Any future switch to the euro would therefore require the support of large majorities in the legislature to change currencies. Such a step needs the overwhelming support of the public, said Foreign Minister Petr Macinka in comments defending the proposal on Monday.
The amendments “do not make adopting a common currency impossible,” said Finance Minister Alena Schillerova on Monday. But, she cautioned, as long as the current government is in power, it will “neither propose nor strive for accession to the euro zone.”Passing the amendment requires broader political backing as Prime Minister Andrej Babis’s ruling coalition lacks the votes needed to push through the measure alone. Still, the move underscores Prague’s opposition to the euro zone at a time when other EU members are showing renewed enthusiasm for the shared currency.
The euro zone grew this year with admission of Bulgaria in January, its first new entrant since Croatia in 2023. Nearby Hungary is also eyeing euro adoption, with Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s government recently pledging to meet the conditions for entry.
Resistance to the euro has been driven by public fears its adoption would trigger rounds of price increases and a Czech central bank policymakers have argued for retaining an independent monetary policy and flexibility in exchange rates. In his comments on Monday, Macinka called the koruna the “key to our economic sovereignty.”The Czech Republic is legally committed under its EU accession treaty to eventually adopt the common currency, though no deadline is specified.
