KUALA LUMPUR/BANGKOK -- When Ammar Haziq Zulkifli tied the knot last month in Petaling Jaya, 20 kilometers west of Kuala Lumpur, soaring prices loomed large in the marriage planning.
"Rising living costs have made people accept, and to some extent encourage, simpler weddings," the 26-year-old customer service executive told Nikkei Asia.
Scaling back the guest list to reduce the catering bill and postponing the reception after the ceremony to give him more time to save money were two ways Ammar eased the financial pain. "A big part of those rising costs came from the food catering side, which is caused by inflation," he said. "That category alone contributed to more than a half of the rise in the overall cost. That's why when we made the guest list smaller, the cost came down significantly." Such an approach has become increasingly common across Southeast Asia as the economic pain inflicted by this year's global energy crisis takes its toll, combined with millennials' preference to delay or not bother marrying, wanting more intimate celebrations compared to their parents and a desire to be more self-sufficient.
In Indonesia, for example, there were 1.48 million marriages in 2025, a similar total to 2024 but down from 2.1 million 11 years earlier.
Other ways people are saving money this year, businesspeople in the sector said, include avoiding popular dates that are considered auspicious and usually more expensive, asking for guests to share costs instead of giving presents and booking further in advance to secure a better deal.

In its latest economic outlook, released earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund raised its 2026 economic growth forecast for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations from 4.1% to 4.4%. But much of this has been buoyed by investments in data centers and artificial intelligence. In many countries, people are not feeling this resilience as inflation and interest rates rise.
While data on the wedding sector is scarce or anecdotal, numerous couples planning their nuptials and businesspeople -- from caterers and photographers to tailors and dress hirers -- said they had noticed a conspicuous reduction in the number of weddings and the amount of money being spent on ceremonies this year.
The Philippines is one of the few countries that has already released figures for the number of registered marriages in 2026. In the first three months of the year, the most recent period for which data has been published, the total was down 35% compared to the same period last year, according to the Philippines Statistics Agency. The reasons for this are not clear, but in March 2026, as the energy crisis took hold after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, the number of marriages fell 83% compared to March 2025.
Krungthai Card, a Thai credit card company with 3.8 million accounts, released a study in March 2026 with SabuyWedding, a digital wedding platform, that found one of this year's trends would be "micro and intimate weddings, which it defined as "smaller gatherings of around 15 to 50 guests." This was echoed by Justin Ng, founder of Singapore-based bridal studio The Aurora Wedding, who said another term for the ceremonies is "mini-weddings." "Singapore couples prefer to prioritize experiences and guest comfort over lavish expenditure," he explained.
Sanya Saengnoo, who owns dress hiring shop C@Nina in Bangkok and has been in the business for a decade, said the slowdown began in Thailand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic but has accelerated this year.
"I think this is the most difficult period the wedding industry has ever faced," he told Nikkei Asia. "For example, we've had customers who came in to order wedding dresses but later cancelled their orders.
"Given the current economic situation, some customers are opting for smaller weddings, with smaller budgets than before. They are also reducing the number of guests to save money." Malaysian event organizer J. Kiran, who said he has handled more than 1,000 weddings over two decades, said rising costs mean the "majority [of couples] are trying to reduce their budget" without cancelling. One couple he worked with recently initially requested 10 people performing four dances but cut back to four dancers doing two songs.
Annasa Rizki Kamalina, 28, a Jakarta office worker, took a minimalist approach to her wedding in February. She and her fiance, Ridho Rangeran, visited their local Religious Affairs Ministry office in South Jakarta after Friday prayers, performed the ceremony, and then rushed home where they posed in the yard to commemorate the occasion.

This was a stark contrast to her older brother, who had 2,000 guests at his wedding in 2020.
"I had a business trip the following Tuesday, and my husband was busy as well," Kamalina explained, adding that she also took into account her family's request to hold the wedding event before the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.
Other considerations behind the scale of the event were that the couple wanted to "cover everything" themselves and Indonesia's economy -- which was stuttering in many respects even before the start of the Iran war.
They plan to have a "relatively compact" party of 300 family and friends toward the end of the year and have capped the budget at 100 million rupiah ($5,550). "The most important thing is that we are already legally and religiously married," Kamalina said. "In this economy, spending such a large amount of money, especially by borrowing or depleting our savings, is not a wise decision." Some people are adopting an alternative approach to reducing the financial burden of their celebrations.

After initially capping their budget at 300,000 pesos ($4,715), Miguel Llona said the guest list for his wedding planned for January in Antipolo, some 20 kilometers east of Manila, expanded to 130 people, forcing a shift to a larger venue and sending costs soaring past their original limit.
To manage the financial strain without draining their savings, Llona, 37, and his fiancee Kristine Joy Patag, 36, turned to a community-driven funding strategy. "Our workaround is to ask some of our friends and family to shoulder some of our expenses as their wedding gift to us," he told Nikkei Asia.
Relatives are sponsoring the cocktail hour catering while friends are providing discounted photography and custom invitation designs.
Having proposed in early 2026, Llona has no plans to cancel or postpone the wedding. "I'm getting older and I want to live together with my partner, and getting married is the way to do that," he said. "What's important for me is to marry the person that I want to spend the rest of my life with, with the belief that everything will take care of itself once I've achieved that." Another trend some businesspeople in the sector have noticed as couples look to cut costs is the influx of inexperienced service providers looking to make money. One Thai wedding photographer, who goes by the name Bullet Rider, described business as "quite sluggish lately," partly because of numerous newcomers offering much cheaper prices. "Clients want cheap photographers, but most of those photographers don't produce work to a high standard," she said.
Avoiding auspicious dates is also a way to save money, according to Peerapat Youngsuwan, who runs La Moon Nee, a wedding dress rental shop in Thailand's Pathum Thani province. "Some couples don't choose auspicious dates at all, but instead pick convenient days, such as weekends or long public holidays. At least that way they don't have to take time off work or lose income, and their friends and bosses can attend the ceremony," he said, adding that more people are booking "much further in advance to avoid higher prices or having to arrange things at the last minute." Liya, center, applies makeup to a bride at a wedding hall in Muar, Johor, Malaysia, on Sept. 26.
In such circumstances, some businesspeople in the sector are pivoting away from weddings to corporate events. Vietnamese florist Cao Thuy Trang said that "spending on weddings has been cut back to around 70% of what it was about three years ago," even though "the number of wedding bookings is still about twice what it was seven years ago."
As a result, she said she has "almost completely withdrawn from the wedding industry. Competition has exploded, so I've shifted into retail, events and corporate work."
Nekita, a Kuala Lumpur wedding planner, has made a similar switch after bookings waned. This year she has handled only four weddings compared with more than 10 for each of the past four years. She has just one booking so far for 2027. "Wedding requests are declining," she said. "I feel corporate is more right now." There are some silver linings amid the gloom. Tourism authorities, particularly in Thailand and Vietnam, are heavily promoting their nations as locations for destination weddings, and with some success, particularly in South Asia. Vietnamese state-run news agency VNA reported that Quang Ninh province -- home to scenic Ha Long Bay -- hosted six Indian "high net worth weddings" in the first four months of the year. Each reportedly lasted several days and the estimated budgets ran into millions of dollars.
