Illegal small-scale gold mining, known as galamsey, is increasingly threatening Ghana's hydroelectric power supply after years of damaging the country's forests and rivers. Authorities say protecting energy infrastructure could add new urgency to crackdowns on the trade.

Illegal small-scale gold mining, known locally as galamsey, is increasingly threatening Ghana's energy security, according to local reporting. The practice has already caused extensive damage to the country's forests, polluted rivers and undermined the livelihoods of mining communities. Ghana depends heavily on hydroelectric power generated along the Volta River system, and unregulated mining near waterways has raised concern about silt and chemical runoff reaching the rivers that feed the country's dams.

Galamsey operations, which often use mercury to extract gold, have already fouled major waterways including the Pra and Ankobra rivers in recent years. Ghanaian authorities have launched periodic crackdowns on illegal mining sites, but enforcement has struggled to keep pace with a trade that draws thousands of informal miners lured by high global gold prices. Gold remains one of Ghana's largest export earners, and officials have signaled that protecting energy infrastructure could become a new argument for tougher action against galamsey operators.
