Nobody sets out to build file infrastructure that makes employees less productive. Yet sensible technology decisions made years ago can leave organizations wrestling with systems that no longer suit how their teams work. Take network-attached storage (NAS). It has long provided a dependable way to store and access files. But what happens when the people using those files are no longer sitting in the same building, or even the same country?

A project team can spend its morning waiting for a multi-gigabyte file to transfer over a VPN, then lose more time checking whether the copy they received is the latest. No single delay attracts much attention. Repeat that across projects and the cost starts to add up. The price of working around the problem When shared access becomes difficult, employees find workarounds. They download local copies, duplicate folders, and transfer files between systems to keep projects moving.

Now imagine an architecture firm sharing a large building model between design offices. One team updates its copy while another works from yesterday’s export. Before anyone can move forward, someone has to reconcile the differences. That's time spent managing files rather than designing the building. Duplicated data consumes storage capacity and complicates oversight. Meanwhile, IT must keep legacy infrastructure running while addressing performance, cost, security, and governance requirements.

Replacing every storage system is rarely a practical first move. Organizations have invested in infrastructure, access controls, and established processes. The sharper question is whether the way people access and collaborate on files needs to change. A conversation worth having The right starting point depends on which workflows create the most friction. Leaders need to identify the costs hidden in file transfers, local copies, and avoidable rework before choosing how to modernize.

Those are the issues The and LucidLink will put on the table at an invitation-only executive dinner in London on Tuesday, November 24. Moderated by The’s Joe Fay, the roundtable will examine modernizing file infrastructure while protecting existing storage and governance investments. It's a chance to compare practical experience with peers who have faced the same uncomfortable question: when does a familiar system start holding the business back? Request your place at the November 24 dinner Sponsored by LucidLink.
