Solutions Inc. was awarded a US government contract valued at almost $140 million to upgrade the Federal Bureau of Prisons communications systems at 63 facilities across the country.

The contract calls for replacing older equipment at federal prisons, including radios and dispatch consoles, over the next two years, BOP and the company said Tuesday. The bureau plans to issue 22,000 new radios, which will include some access to cellular networks and a feature that triggers an emergency alert if they detect a corrections officer has fallen.

The bureau, which has more than 34,000 staff, operates 118 institutions and manages an inmate population of more than 150,000, according to its website.

The upgrades will make it easier for officers to communicate with each other “as they move through thick prison walls and cellular dead zones,” Motorola Chief Operating Officer Jack Molloy said in a statement.

A bureau spokesperson said the modernization complies with the Prison Camera Reform Act of 2021 and will be paid for with funds from last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which sought to cut taxes, scale back some government programs and redirect national spending on Trump administration priorities.
