Tokyo and surrounding prefectures were shaken early Thursday morning by a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in northeastern Chiba Prefecture. The earthquake occurred at 12:07 a.m. at a depth of 50 kilometers in the town of Yokoshibahikari, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, registering lower five on Japan’s seven-point shindo seismic scale. No tsunami alert was issued.
