Online used-car retailer Carvana Co. reported better-than-expected results on a key profit measure even as high fuel prices and interest rates pressure the business.

Carvana recorded $800 million in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, which was slightly ahead of analyst estimates. The company expects full-year adjusted Ebitda will be at the high end of its guidance of up to $3 billion.

The retailer continues to outpace competitors with vehicle sales rising 39% in a market where vehicles sales have been flat as consumers wrestle with high prices at the gas pump and on the retail lot. Carvana has moved to give consumers a better deal to keep sales going, which has cut into its profits.

In the third quarter, Carvana sold 217,385 retail units and had total revenue of $8 billion, which were both records.

Gross profit per vehicle sold was $6,997, a decrease of $365 from the prior year. Carvana estimates that fuel prices and interest rates hurt profits by about $200 per unit. Carvana is also giving customers better rates on the loans it makes to car buyers.

Carvana shares rose 3% in extended trading. The stock had fallen 30% this year through Wednesday’s close, compared with a 13% gain in the S&P 500 Index.
