Inc., one of the world’s biggest data-center companies, said mounting barriers to bringing new projects online will make existing capacity more valuable and potentially strengthen its grip on the market — including pricing.
“If there are a number of projects canceled, then it only makes what is already scarce capacity much more of a scarce resource,” Chief Executive Officer Adaire Fox-Martin told analysts on a call Wednesday. She said that could give Equinix room to charge more.
Power shortages, local opposition and new legislation are increasingly impeding data-center construction. Still, Equinix executives said, the company is better positioned than some rivals because it has dozens of projects spread out geographically and can expand existing campuses rather than breaking ground on new ones.
“We’re not tone deaf for sure,” Fox-Martin said of concerns around power availability. The company’s projects typically demand less power than many wholesale or hyperscale developments, she said, making it easier for utilities to meet their needs.
About 80% of the company’s new capacity expansion is in markets where Equinix has operated for years, Chief Financial Officer Olivier Leonetti said. The company also has 48 projects underway, giving it flexibility if individual developments run into delays. “If one maybe goes to the left, the other one usually goes to the right,” he said.
Equinix said it aims to deliver almost 40% more server cabinets this year than initially planned, after annualized gross bookings rose 35% to a record $533 million. The stock has climbed 32% this year.
