South Korean memory chip giant SK Hynix kept almost 80 per cent of its total sales as operating profit last quarter, a margin almost unheard of in manufacturing, as the country’s chipmakers reap the rewards of the global artificial intelligence boom.
Operating profit, defined as earnings from the company’s core business before interest and taxes, soared 632 per cent in the three months to September from a year earlier to 83.33 trillion won (US$62.76 billion) on revenue of 104.62 trillion won, SK Hynix reported on Wednesday – marking its sixth consecutive record quarter.
Analysts had expected the company to report an operating profit of about 77 trillion won. Its operating margin, or the share of revenue left as operating profit, was 79.7 per cent in the third quarter, up from 72 per cent in the first and 76.3 per cent in the second.
Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix’s main domestic rival, reported preliminary third-quarter figures earlier this month. Its revenue came in at 195 trillion won, up 126.6 per cent, and operating profit was 107.4 trillion won, up 782.5 per cent – a margin of about 55 per cent.
Sky-high chip prices drove the profit surge, according to Hur Jung, an economics professor at Sogang University, who called it “an extremely rare operating margin, indeed”.
“Sales volumes have certainly increased, but the rise in operating profit should be attributed mainly to price increases rather than the volume of chips sold,” he said.

These were “oligopolistic profits”, Hur said, meaning they came from a market controlled by few sellers. “There simply aren’t many companies capable of replacing them.”Together, SK Hynix and Samsung supply more than 60 per cent of the world’s dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), the chips needed to hold the data computers are actively working on. They also have a near-duopoly in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a faster type of DRAM that AI systems use.
Any gains in market share by Chinese chipmakers would come at the expense of South Korean companiesKim Gwang-suk, economist Kim Gwang-suk, head of economic research at the Institute for Korean Economy and Industry and a Hanyang University professor, said demand for memory chips, especially HBM for data centres, had surged while supplies stayed tight.
“As a result, various customers have agreed to contracts at higher prices, enabling the companies to break their previous earnings records,” he said.
Both chipmakers face fierce competition from US rival Micron Technology and Chinese manufacturers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC).
But analysts say decades of manufacturing experience, mature production processes and advanced packaging facilities, which assemble finished chips, give the South Korean companies an edge in critical segments such as memory for data centres.
SK Hynix has said it is extending long-term agreements with some customers and discussing terms beyond the typical five years to secure more predictable earnings.
Contracted volumes already account for more than 50 per cent of the company’s total production capacity in both 2027 and 2028.
“Our business structure is transforming into one with earnings stability and mid- to long-term demand visibility,” CEO Kwak Noh-jung said in a statement, in which he credited the blockbuster profits to “customer trust built through our technological competitiveness”.
Alongside its quarterly results, SK Hynix announced a 60 trillion won shareholder-return plan, on top of a 40 trillion won programme completed last week. It also plans to pay out most of the gains realised from its stake in Japan’s Kioxia, a flash-memory maker, through a special one-off dividend.
Shareholders stand to receive about 20,000 won (US$15) per share from the third quarter’s planned distribution. The company’s shares were trading at 1.487 million won on Wednesday, up more than 10 per cent from the previous day.
Hur said both companies’ record-shattering financial results would strengthen their ability to fund further research and expand production. But Kim questioned whether such profits and operating margins could last over the long term.
“If prices peak out, operating margins could come under pressure,” he said, forecasting that margins were likely to moderate in the fourth quarter of the year or the first quarter of 2027.
He said revenue could still grow, just through higher volume rather than higher prices, causing margins to level off.
Hur expects the AI chip windfall to last another two to three years, but not indefinitely.
Two factors could extend the boom. The first is Chinese demand. ByteDance, Tencent Holdings and Alibaba, which owns the South China Morning Post, are all preparing heavy AI spending.
But Kim said domestic Chinese manufacturers such as CXMT and YMTC still struggled to mass-produce cutting-edge memory chips.
“To make the necessary capital investments and catch up fast in the AI race, Chinese tech companies may seek long-term supply contracts with South Korean chipmakers,” he said.
The second factor is technology. Both South Korean companies are developing the next generation of HBM – designed for better energy efficiency and capacity by stacking several memory layers vertically, allowing them to more easily handle large volumes of data.
These products hitting the market could give both companies a significant boost, Kim said, with the main challenge coming from China’s semiconductor industry.
Much would depend on the amount of market share CXMT was able to capture, “particularly in the lower-priced memory segment” and whether Chinese competitors could begin mass producing higher-performance chips, he said.
CXMT had also announced plans to develop HBM, but “whether it can progress from that ambition to mass production remains an important question”, Kim said.
Meanwhile, Hur said the foreign-currency earnings from chip exports could help stabilise South Korea’s won, but he cast doubt on the benefits spreading much further.
“While it may benefit shareholders through dividends, and employees could also receive bonuses, I don’t think the gains will translate into a broader economic trickle-down effect,” he said.
