The first Taiwanese commercial aircraft flew over Pakistan on Thursday morning following an abrupt u-turn by authorities to approve permits.

Eva Airways Corp. Flight 65 from Taipei to Vienna entered Pakistani airspace at about 3:30am local time, Flightradar24 tracking data showed.

All other Europe-bound Eva Air and China Airlines Ltd. flights that departed late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning have opted to use Russian airspace, or go via India.

The airlines had been forced to detour, including flying over Russia, since Sunday after Pakistan shut its airspace to Taiwanese carriers citing support of Beijing’s One-China policy.

But just hours after Bloomberg News reported the move, Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority hastily renewed the permits for the Taiwanese carriers. They’ll now be allowed to fly through Pakistani airspace from Oct. 28 to March 27, according to documents dated Wednesday seen by Bloomberg. EVA Air declined to comment. China Airlines didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

While Beijing has long tried to isolate Taiwan on the world stage, no country had previously said it would deny all Taiwanese carriers use of airspace. China claims Taiwan as territory that must be brought under its control — a stance Taipei rejects.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday had condemned Pakistan’s move, slamming Islamabad for “parroting China’s distorted narrative” and weaponizing access to its airspace. Taiwan “has never been subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that it will remain in close contact with transportation authorities.
