Airlines will cut nearly 700,000 seats from their China-Japan flights and axe more than 5,000 flights for the coming winter travel season as a nearly year-old political squabble continues to depress tourism, according to aviation data provider OAG.
During the commercial aviation industry’s winter season, October 25 through March 27, carriers allocated a combined 2,871,270 seats, compared with 3,554,167 in the same season last year, OAG data showed.
The same airlines allocated 3,889,781 seats in the six months just ended, representing a cut of more than 1 million compared with the coming winter. Summer is traditionally a busier time of year for airlines.
The drop in seat capacity reflected “the power of geopolitics on the aviation industry”, said John Grant, OAG chief analyst.
Carriers flying between the two Asian economic giants also slashed 5,208 flights for the coming winter season, compared with the just-ended summer season, and 5,433 versus winter a year ago, according to the OAG data.
Airlines were planning 12,613 flights for the coming six months, the data showed, based on information from 22 carriers. Chinese airlines, rather than their Japanese peers, are cutting back the most.
Air China allocated 60,898 fewer seats for the winter season, compared with the same block of time last year, while China Eastern Airlines shed 111,260 seats and China Southern Airlines took away 82,575, the data showed.
Air China also removed 909 flights for winter 2026-2027 versus a year earlier, as China Eastern dropped 1,185 and China Southern axed 511.
The OAG data pointed to barely any change in flight frequency by Japanese carriers for the 2026-2027 winter season compared with a year earlier. All Nippon Airways, for example, retained all its 1,848 flights.
Mass flight cancellations began in November 2025 after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that Tokyo could deploy military forces in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait.
Beijing issued a travel warning that month urging Chinese citizens to avoid visiting Japan, and several Chinese airlines offered customers full refunds on Japan-bound flight bookings. China was previously Japan’s largest source of overseas tourists.
Possibly straining ties further, Japanese and US forces this month rehearsed anti-ship strikes and mobile missile deployments in Kyushu and Japan’s southwestern islands, seen as preparation to challenge Beijing’s ability to control surrounding waters in a conflict over Taiwan.
Low-cost airlines could maintain capacity for the remaining China-Japan tourism market, said Yoichiro Sato, a professor in the College of Asia-Pacific Studies at Ritsumeikan Asia-Pacific University in Japan. But airfares on major routes would probably rise, he added.
“This will raise the cost of business travel by Japanese technicians and engineers, who serve the Chinese users of Japan-built manufacturing equipment,” Sato said.
