A police officer has denied failing to properly label DNA samples taken from slain Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung’s ex-husband after his arrest more than three years ago.

Lam, who was a detective constable at the time, said Kwong sustained a 2cm-by-2cm abrasion on his right cheek when he fell to the ground during a struggle with officers.

Defence counsel Andrew Raffell argued that Lam, who collected the swabs from Alex Kwong, had forgotten to label the samples with the corresponding barcodes and seal them in a tamper-evident bag. He pointed to the absence of any mention of those steps in the officer’s written statement.

Lam rejected the contention, saying he had simply omitted details of the established procedures for collecting DNA samples from suspects.

Government chemist Wun Hau-ling, who conducted DNA profiling on samples collected from the defendants, said the evidence bag containing Alex Kwong’s buccal swabs was intact and properly sealed when it arrived at the laboratory. She added that she would have rejected the samples had they been improperly labelled.

Thursday’s hearing was cut short after lawyers raised a legal issue midway through the session. Deputy Judge Brian Keith is expected to update the jury on Friday.
