POLITICO’s Finn McHugh sat down with Negrescu at Canberra’s Hyatt Hotel, discussing the FTA, cooperation on defense and immigration, and why social media incentivizes politicians to be more radical. Why are you in Australia and what are you hoping to achieve here?

It’s not my first trip here. I wanted to come here also to see where we are right now, in particular with regards to the accession to the Horizon program and the fact that this autumn there will be the official start of the collaboration around that key European research program. But also to see where we are on the free trade agreement, because I want to see whether we are ready to move forward. For me, it is something I think is relevant to try to conclude, to approve this trade agreement and to implement it in a successful way as it was the case for New Zealand.
