TOKYO -- Japanese telecommunications group KDDI said Thursday it will build another data center in London to capture demand driven by the artificial intelligence boom.

KDDI's European subsidiary acquired a plot of land in the East India Dock area of the British capital for about 220 million pounds ($294 million). The completion date for the data center project has not been set, but KDDI hopes to have the facility up and running soon.

The AI-ready data center is expected to have a capacity of roughly 50 megawatts. It will be equipped with graphics processing unit servers, and the environment will support high capacity and low latency network connectivity.

In October last year, KDDI began construction on a 22.4 MW data center in London, investing about 60 billion yen ($380 million at current rates) in the project. The site is due to open next fiscal year. Once all planned projects are completed, KDDI will have seven data centers in London with a total capacity of 107.1 MW.
